AVITRACK - Aircrafts surroundings, categorised Vehicles & Individuals Tracking for apRon's Activity model interpretation & ChecK

From the arrival to the departure of the aircraft, routing or specific operations have to respect rules. Apron's operations are listed and scheduled in an actions plan. Positions and movements around the aircraft are analysed to survey usual activity and to detect special events. The access in apron's sensible zones is possible in conformity with the provisional plan of traffic in the apron area where, as a fundamental condition, every people's and service's car have to be empowered for a special activity in the area.
The action of each unit and the inter-actions between all of them are automatically checked. AVITRACK identifies, understands and tracks every action on the apron.

AVITRACK offers an intelligent survey close to the aircraft, addressing aircraft, vehicles and people's presence and movement.
AVITRACK is based on usual sensors used for traditional video-surveillance. All sensors installation is full beneficial for the classic survey functions.
Improving efficiency, security and capacity of the EU's airports is one of the priorities of the European Commission and the final target of AVITRACK.

The project addresses the specific case of automatically supervising commercial aircraft servicing operations at a designated airport. On the apron area, aircrafts are parked and serviced by specialised ground support vehicles (fuel, catering, baggage, small maintenance). The efficiency and security of the handling (servicing) process are significant issues for airport authorities, aircraft operators and citizens.
The AVITRACK apron's activity model target of the research, will be able to model, interpret and check normal servicing operations and to track objects and persons over the airport parking area. The envisaged application is the Airport away from the terminal buildings, in most cases, under the control of the airport operators and not air traffic control.
It is envisaged that the model will exploit real-time information from video images. Hardware devices and algorithms, yet to be developed, will be based on image segmentation, objects tracking and intelligent knowledge based system needs and capabilities. The interpretation and model checking will identify the kind of objects and their roles. Modelled servicing tasks will be compared with the reality to monitor apron global-activities; unexpected delays will generate warnings to airport operators; direct operating cost savings are expected as well as the removal of turn around time over-run.
In terms of airborne aircraft security, aviation history shows that hostile actions, which later occur onboard, have started at an aircraft-servicing site. This appears to be one of the weakest links in aviation security. The AVITRACK interpretation and check research target is to give ground image representation in real-time to airport authorities in order to intercept hostile individuals.

EXPECTED RESULTS
Modelling, interpretation and check of apron's activities leading to
10% decrease in aircraft servicing costs,
Reduction in take off delays due to turn around time over-run,
Warning on every hostile attempt that could be initiated while aircrafts are parked.
